The Challenge
An audit of Data Center access at a major medical organization uncovered a serious and immediate security risk. Seventy-five percent of individuals entering the Data Center were non-compliant with existing security and access policies.
Unauthorized or inadequately monitored entry exposed critical IT infrastructure to the risk of accidental disruption, data vulnerability, and instability in the systems that supported clinical services. The scale of non-compliance was the product of outdated permissions, inconsistent enforcement, and a lack of clear governance.
The Approach
A rapid improvement initiative was launched to close the security gap:
- All existing access permissions were reviewed and compared against required role-based access standards
- A comprehensive cleanup of the Data Center access list was performed, removing outdated permissions and ensuring only individuals with a legitimate, current need retained entry rights
- A controlled entry process was implemented to enforce verification at every access point
- IT and Facilities teams were engaged to strengthen communication protocols and ensure consistent adherence to the new procedures
The Outcome
Compliance increased from 25 percent to 100 percent, eliminating unauthorized entry and substantially reducing the operational risk to systems the organization depended on to deliver patient care.
The Data Center now operates under a fully governed, predictable access model aligned with security best practices.
